Another Eviction, A Rescue and Another Birthday.

Our Location today is Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada.

This is the first day since we returned home last Saturday that the sunlight seeping around the window drapes caused me to wake up. The temperature at the time was only in the mid 50’s but with clear sunny skies and barely a wisp of a breeze it finally felt like spring.

If you recall on Wednesday we had to evict a Robin’s nest from the Pin Box on our trailer. As we were having breakfast this morning we noted another robin carrying nesting materials to the top of our Air Conditioner sleeve. After repeated trips we knew we had to serve another Eviction Notice because when we turn on the AC that could be a fire hazard and besides the Defecation all over the balcony and its contents is not pretty either.

We still have chores that need to be done outside on the vehicles but when you are on a roll with bookkeeping sometimes you’re just better off to keep going until you’re done.

By 10:00 we had a knock on our door from Dan the building maintenance person. He came to take care of a few things that I’d submitted a work-order on since our return. While we were away electrical contractors had replaced all the building light fixtures to more energy efficient models but had made holes next to the fixtures. Dan was there to patch and paint over the holes. He said he’s had to do the same in most of the apartments and he should not have had to.

By lunchtime Kathy had finished her bookkeeping and I’d completed the new spreadsheet as well as testing its functions. We’d finished eating our lunch just after noon when the phone rang. It was my sister Anna from London wishing me a Happy Birthday. She thought what better time to call and be certain that we’d be home. Since our birthdays are two days apart we normally celebrate on the day between.

Just as we were saying our good byes we could hear emergency sirens growing closer. Being this building is on a main road we didn’t think anything of it. Suddenly the sirens grew very loud and we could see the flashing lights reflecting off the windows in the next building. They were at our building but we didn’t hear any alarms.

It turned out a young couple had locked themselves out of their car and their two year old child was still inside. We watched from our dining room window while the fire rescue struggled unsuccessfully to open the car without breaking a window. After ten minutes a unit commander arrived with a Slim Jim and thirty seconds later had the car open. The mother had been in tears for a while but it wasn’t until the car was opened that the father appeared to be having chest pains. After calming the young parents down the rescue team was immediately dispatched to another call.

During all this excitement Kathy and I noticed how dirty the windows had gotten since we left. It took us nearly a half hour to clean just the dining room windows. The windows are probably thirty years old and probably seldom cleaned so even though we cleaned and recleaned and recleaned them again they are far from perfect. We’ll wait for another day to do another room’s windows.

I received more birthday wishes by the phone throughout the afternoon. I also made calls to our phone provider Bell to get our answering system reactivated. It seems that now when you suspend your service while you go away there is no guarantee that you can get the same package back when you reactivate it. I think it’s time to start shopping around for a different provider. I also called Verizon because Kathy was having problems getting into our account the last few days. I also got a better understanding of their billing system which helped clear a few questions about some unbelievable numbers we’d seen online.

For supper we didn’t feel like cooking and since we hadn’t been out to celebrate our birthdays as we normally do we decided to go to Pizza Hut for a thin crust Hawaiian pizza. We are not fond of all their pizzas but they do a great job on their thin crust pizzas which helps to keep our carb intake down. It was excellent as usual.

Kathy and I would like to welcome Merikay MacKenna from the blog Merikay’s Dreams. She and her husband Craig are now fulltime RVers and have been slowly getting to see the beauty nature has left for us to see. Thanks for following along and feel free to leave a comment. Be Safe and Enjoy!

It’s about time.

Is it true that carrots are good for your eyesight?

Well, you never see rabbits wearing glasses.

  1. A very happy birthday to you Rick. Sounds like you had a ton of excitement on your birthday. I can't image how frighten that little 2-year old must have felt.

  2. Happy Birthday! Wow, what a day - the poor mom and dad must have been terrified with their child in the car.
