Sunset at Key West.

Our Location today is Sugarloaf Key, Florida.

As we mentioned in last night’s post we were going back to Key West today. Even with that thought in mind we had not set the alarm last night and we had no problem at all to sleep. Getting up shortly before 8:00 this morning we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and even took the time to read a few blogs before heading out the door. Before leaving the park we circled around to see if Doug and Nancy were up and ready to go but looking at their VW Westfalia it appeared that they had already left so we just carried on.

After wearing ourselves out on Monday when we had taken the bus to Key West we had returned to the park before dark. Karen and Al had commented on that post “I hope you get a chance to experience Mallory Square for the sunset celebration. It's worth the effort.” So by leaving close to 8:30 we made a plan to take our time seeing things we hadn’t seen on Monday and stick around for the Sunset Celebration.
Kathy meeting an old friend.
We had been told that there were places to park not far away from Mallory Square and we found such a place at the Post Office. The cost covered us until the wee hours of tomorrow morning in case by chance we’d celebrated too much. This was also close enough to Duval Street that we were able to review what we’d missed and already seen.
Philly Cheese Steak sandwich.
By noon hour we started checking menus posted outside some of the eateries and found most without prices attached which normally means sticker shock with high prices. The Two Friends Patio Restaurant had menus posted with reasonably priced food and after ordering our meals we were not disappointed. We had great tasting food and the service was excellent. Kathy and I even had a view from our table of two of the other restaurants that people would check out their menus without prices then finally make their way to the same place we were at. This place had a constant turnover of clientele while the other places remained empty.
Carmel Apple Crisp with Ice Cream.
After lunch we continued walking but luckily there was a cool breeze constantly blowing which helped us not to get over heated. Of course we also cooled down by stopping at Denny’s for an Ice Cream treat. We didn’t worry about the calories too much because we had walked to within a block north of the southerly point and were now half way back to Mallory Square.
That's a lot of money hanging from that ceiling..
Along the way I noted a patio restaurant bar that had dollar bills stuck to the ceiling and I started taking pictures. Suddenly Kathy asks me “Isn’t that Doug and Nancy?” Yes it was. We talked briefly and when they said they were staying for the sunset we offered them a ride. We explained that the truck was parked in the lot right next to their bus stop.

We continued our walk and finally found a bench by the marina to sit for nearly an hour and enjoy the view. This gave us a chance to watch boats of many different shapes and sizes sail and cruise by our location.

Chicken Caesar Wrap.
It was nearing 5:00 and we wanted to eat supper before returning to Mallory Square so we checked the menu at the Sunset Pier. Surprisingly they were not expensive at all and your meal was served out on the pier so we continued watching the boats going by while enjoying our meals. Even though the rays of the sun were making things hot the breeze off the water was keeping us comfortable.
Juggling fire and a knife on a 12 foot Unicycle.
Sword Swallower.
We’d taken our time eating so it was after 6:00 before we arrived at Mallory Square. We had a good view for the sunset but then we became interested in the different performances that were taking place in the square. There were jugglers, acrobats, fire eaters, singers and even a sword swallower. Many of the entertainers actually waited until the sun was set before starting their performances but lost most of the crowd that had only come for the Sunset.

Doug and Nancy had just arrived back to the truck before we did. Driving down Highway 1 we managed to point out a few places that they had missed but will go back to see. We found out they had slept in and only left the park after 10:00. They had also experienced the hour and a half bus ride like we had done on Monday. They asked and we told them of most of the modifications we’ve done to the trailer so far. It was nearly 9:00 by the time we dropped them off at their site with the promise of seeing them tomorrow.

Sailing off into the Sunset.
Tonight we are really thankful that we listened to Karen and Al’s suggestion to experience the sunset celebration at Mallory Square before leaving Key West. Supper on the dock was also really a treat.  Thanks for following along and feel free to leave a comment. Be Safe and Enjoy!

  1. I'm glad you got to enjoy the sunset celebration on Mallory Square. We always watch sunset from the Sunset Pier, so I think you picked the best location. We'll have to remember that restaurant. You're right, some restaurants are very pricey.

  2. We rarely ever go to a restaurant unless we know the prices. If they can't show us the price in the window, to us it mean it is $$$.
Gorgeous sunset. What a wonderful day you two had.
